The U.S. Department of Energy governs the standards for efficiency for heating and cooling units built in the nation. Because so much of the energy consumed in your home is directly due to heating and cooling purposes, it helps to look at products that carry a high efficiency rating.
You’ll notice that furnaces feature what’s known as an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating). The AFUE is simply a measurement of percentage of heat produced by the unit for each dollar of fuel it consumes. Comparable to the way motorists consider miles-per-gallon for their cars, a high AFUE rating means lower fuel costs.
For instance, a furnace with an AFUE of 95 converts 95 percent of the gas it consumes to useable heat. Furnaces with an AFUE of 90 percent or higher are considered by the industry as high-efficiency.
